One of my most cherished memories from elementary school is the joy of playing “Invisible Friend.” Each month, our teacher would share a secret—who we were meant to send letters to for 30 days. I often found myself excitedly searching for handwritten letters tucked away in unexpected corners of the school. I also enjoyed the simple pleasure of leaving small gifts for my friend along the way.
To keep Mystery alive, starting April 1, I will send you a note at the beginning of each month, with the name of the friend to whom you will be “invisible”. The idea is that during the course of each month, you will share your gift(s) with me in word or PDF format, and I will deliver it to your friend. I will act as your mail carrier, and will not open any of the gifts intended for your friend. There’s no need to overwhelm yourself with a gift every day for 30 days! One or two thoughtful gifts a month will be more than enough!
Your gifts don’t have to be letters alone; they can be drawings, pictures, songs, silence and all else that will spontaneously arise in and through you.
I recommend that you tune into your friend and yourself as you prepare to give and receive your gift:
Pay attention to the act of Giving:
~ What are your feelings as you create your gift?
~ Do you notice any expectations?
~ How does it feel to be invisible?
Pay attention to the experience of Receiving:
~ Notice your first reaction as you open your gift.
~ Are you aware of any expectations that you may have had?
~ How does it feel to be seen by someone you do not know?…
At the end of the month you will write down your guesses and will keep them to yourself until March 2026 when we will reveal the Invisible Friends’ names month by month.
